Ochsenbraterei at Oktoberfest Munich: hours, the spit-roast ox and the gaps in the sources

The Ochsenbraterei ("ox roastery") is one of the large tents of Oktoberfest on the Theresienwiese, and its name is its programme: this is where the ox is roasted on a spit. This page separates three things that usually get mixed up: what is documented about the tent itself, what applies to the whole Wiesn, and what is not published anywhere.

For this tent, the third list is the longest. Neither its own prices, nor a capacity, nor a dated history appear in the sources we were able to check. We say so, rather than filling the gap.

When is the Ochsenbraterei open?

The tent follows the hours of the large tents, and its own website simply gives the Wiesn period for 2026: 19 September 2026 to 4 October 2026. The extracts we could access give no separate times for the opening day or the final evening.

On the opening Saturday the same applies as everywhere: the tent opens at 9am, and beer only flows after the ceremonial tapping at noon. The kitchen runs from opening time, but the ox takes hours, so the first portions only reach the tables around midday; that is experience, not a published time.

What does a visit cost, and how do you reserve?

Entry is free, as in every Wiesn tent. You pay for food and drink on the spot. No 2026 price list for the Ochsenbraterei appears in the sources we could consult; the official range remains the benchmark: according to the city, a Mass (one-litre mug) costs €14.80 to €15.90 in 2026, depending on the tent.

Reservations go through the tent's official website. The extracts do not say how the process works in detail, which vouchers are required or when the window opens. For the Wiesn as a whole: the reservation window runs between March and May, vouchers cost €40 to €50 per person according to travel sites, and €60 to €80 per seat according to tent operators in 2024.

Without a reservation, the way in is a weekday morning. If you come to the Ochsenbraterei for the ox, midday is better than evening anyway: the kitchen is in its rhythm, and you get a seat without waiting at the door.

When is the tent full, and when can you get a seat?

There is no published occupancy curve for the Ochsenbraterei, nor for any other tent. What can be said follows from the opening hours and the rhythm of the whole Wiesn; it is an estimate, not a measurement.

The advice in one sentence: Tuesday to Thursday, between 11am and 2pm. Avoid Saturday afternoon and evening, and the whole first weekend.

What sets the Ochsenbraterei apart from the other tents?

Its speciality. Where other tents lead with their brewery, their music or a family programme, here the meat takes centre stage: the whole ox on the spit, served in portions. That is the reason to choose this tent if you only see one in a day.

Everything else is regulated as it is everywhere. The tent is part of the official Wiesn operation and follows its hours, capacity rules and security requirements. That makes a visit more predictable than at a village fair, but also stricter: when the tent is full, the door closes, and nobody announces it in advance.

We give no details on the tent's history, founding year or the family behind it. The extracts of the official site do not contain them, and a date from memory would be exactly the kind of mistake this page is trying to avoid.

Which figures exist for the Wiesn 2025, and which are missing for the tent?

The city's report for 2025 gives around 6.5 million visitors and around 6.5 million Mass; the English report PDF says around 6.5 million litres. Food sales rose by 5 to 6% in the large tents and 3 to 4% in the small ones.

For the Oide Wiesn, the PDF gives 360,000 visitors and muenchen.de 373,083 paying guests. The report also mentions a closure on the second Wednesday that pushed the visitor count down, without the extract giving the reason.

None of this exists for the Ochsenbraterei alone: no visitor count, no number of oxen sold, no seat count in the sources checked. Every figure on this page applies to the Wiesn as a whole. More of them, with 2023 and 2024, are on the page about the Wiesn with tent hours and visitor figures.

What information is missing?

• A 2026 price list for the tent. Only the city's official range for a Mass is documented.
• The reservation process in detail. The official site exists, but the extract gives neither the window nor the voucher amount.
• A capacity. Neither indoor nor beer garden seats appear in the sources checked.
• An occupancy curve. The table above is an estimate based on the Wiesn rhythm, not a measurement.
• History and founding year. Not in the extract of the official site, so not claimed here.
