Luggage storage, toilets and drinking water in Munich: the counted locations
Munich keeps no public register of its luggage lockers, toilets and drinking fountains. What exists is a map, and it can be counted: 14 storage points, 459 toilets, 123 water points. With every caveat.
The three most practical questions of a city break have no official answer in Munich. Where can you leave your suitcase, where is a toilet, where can you refill your bottle: the city publishes no directory for any of them.
These questions matter most on an arrival or departure day, when a morning flight lands hours before check-in or an evening flight leaves hours after check-out. What does exist is a freely analysable map. We counted it, with date and method, and say what these figures can and cannot tell you.
How many luggage storage points are there in Munich?
OpenStreetMap records 14 luggage storage points within the city limits, as of 12 September 2026, counted via the Overpass API over city area 3600062428.
That is few for a city of this size, and very probably too few: what gets recorded is what someone has entered. Locker banks in stations are often mapped as part of the station and do not appear individually in this count at all.
In practice: plan on storage at the major stations, not scattered across the city. Prices and opening hours of the individual facilities are published centrally nowhere, not even by the city.
Toilets: 459 recorded locations
Public toilets in Munich are much better mapped than lockers: 459 locations within the city limits, counted on the same reference date.
This figure mixes several things that are not the same for the user, though: city facilities, toilets in parks, in stations and in publicly accessible buildings. Whether any of them charges a fee, is accessible or is open at night is not part of the figure.
If you depend on it, check the individual location rather than relying on density. There is no official list for Munich with opening hours and fees.
The pragmatic option on an arrival day: a hotel near the station will almost always take your luggage before check-in, and that is cheaper and closer than any locker. For the places to stay in Munich, luggage storage appears in the list of facilities, so you can check it before booking.

123 drinking water points are recorded within the city limits. Munich tap water has a good reputation, and refilling your bottle is the simplest saving on a hot day at the Wiesn or in the English Garden.
The same counting caveat applies here: what is recorded are fountains and taps that someone has entered. Whether a point is turned off in winter does not show on the map, and we found no city list with operating times.
Taxi ranks and charging points

- Electric vehicle charging points: 763.
- Rail stops: 398, plus 2,419 bus stops.
The last line is the most useful figure on this page. With stops this dense, the walk to the nearest connection is shorter almost everywhere than the search for a taxi, and much cheaper.
Why are these figures minimums?
Because OpenStreetMap is a community project. An object exists on the map if someone has entered it, and is missing otherwise. For highly visible things like stops, coverage is very high; for lockers inside a building, much lower.
The obvious cross-check, a city dataset, does not exist. The portal opendata.muenchen.de lists 73 datasets, but none on luggage storage, toilets or drinking fountains that could confirm or correct this count.
We give the figures anyway, because a dated minimum is worth more than no figure at all. But they are a minimum, and that is why each of them carries the same reference date.
The city information office in the town hall
For everything that cannot be mapped, there is a physical point of contact: the city information office (Stadtinformation) in the town hall on Marienplatz. City offers such as the Family Pass, whose annual price is not shown online, are also sold there.
It is not a tourist information office in the classic sense, but an administrative office open to the public. For specific questions that have no answer online, it is the shortest route.
Cash, cards and machines
One point comes back in several pieces of research for this site: which machines accept which card types is broken down nowhere in Munich, whether ticket machines, parking meters or lockers.
The official bodies say "coins, notes, cards in some cases" and go no further. For visitors from outside the eurozone, including the UK and North America, that simply means: carry coins and small notes, and do not count on your card working.
The limits of this page
This is the only page in our practical section that does not rest on its own research file. It relies on two automated surveys of 12 September 2026 and says so openly, rather than inventing opening hours or prices that nobody publishes.
What is missing here and will be added as soon as it can be documented: prices and hours of the individual locker facilities, whether each toilet charges a fee, and the winter operating times of the drinking fountains.
