Markets in Munich and around: which ones are open at the weekend
Which markets are open in Munich has a simple answer: it depends on the day of the week. This page sorts Munich's markets by opening day, so you can read off the answer for the day of your visit.

The question of which markets are open in Munich and the surrounding area has no single answer, only one per day of the week. A market that is buzzing on Saturday is often completely closed during the week, and vice versa.
This page sorts Munich's markets by opening day, with times, so you can read off the situation for the day of your visit without relying on a single news item.
Which market is open on which day?
| Market | Opening day | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Viktualienmarkt (centre) | Monday to Saturday | 8am to 8pm |
| Au weekly market (Mariahilfplatz) | Saturday | 7am to 1pm |
| Maxvorstadt farmers' market | Saturday | mornings, according to the city |
| Schwabing farmers' market | Saturday | mornings, according to the city |
| Fürstenried West | Saturday | mornings, according to the city |
| Hadern | Saturday | mornings, according to the city |
| Perlach | Saturday | mornings, according to the city |
| Untersendling, Margaretenplatz and Resi-Huber-Platz | Saturday | mornings, according to the city |
That makes the Viktualienmarkt the only market on this list that is open practically all week. All the neighbourhood markets are concentrated on Saturday morning, usually closing around 1pm.
What is always closed on Sundays?
On Sundays practically every market listed here is closed, the Viktualienmarkt included. The sources from the city and from Munich's tourist board give no Sunday date for any of the weekly markets listed.
If you are looking for a market on a Sunday, your best chance is a seasonal special market such as the Christmas market (Christkindlmarkt) in the run-up to Christmas, which does not exist outside its season. For a regular weekend market visit, Saturday is the only day in Munich.
How much time should you allow for the Viktualienmarkt?
The sources publish opening hours, but no official visit duration. Given its size and range, a realistic span is 45 minutes to 2.5 hours, depending on whether you just look or also eat and shop.
For the Au weekly market or one of the neighbourhood markets, 30 to 75 minutes is usually enough. Waiting times at the stalls are not officially documented, but from experience they rise in the second half of the morning.
If you plan your Saturday morning around the Viktualienmarkt, a room near Marienplatz gives you the shortest way to the market and to the neighbourhood markets at the same time. The places to stay in Munich can be filtered by location.

In the centre, yes: Marienplatz and the Viktualienmarkt are right next to each other, and strolling between them takes barely more than ten minutes. The neighbourhood markets in Schwabing, Hadern, Fürstenried West or Perlach, by contrast, are spread across the whole city.
Combining two neighbourhood markets on one Saturday morning is rarely realistic: the travel time between them usually eats up more than the second market adds. The most dependable combination remains the Viktualienmarkt plus a single market nearby, such as the Au weekly market.
For a weekend planned around the markets, a room near Marienplatz is best placed for getting around, with access to the U-Bahn and S-Bahn for the neighbourhood markets. The places to stay in Munich can be filtered by location.

- A complete list of all markets in the surrounding area. The City of Munich lists its own markets, but there is no consolidated overview for the region.
- Real waiting times at the stalls. Only opening hours are officially documented.
- Short-notice cancellations, for example because of a public holiday or bad weather, are not reported centrally.
These gaps are named here. If you need to be sure for a particular day, check the City of Munich website shortly before your visit.
